Reflections on How Google Fuels Its Idea Factory

Business Week recently published an interview with Google CEO Eric Schmidt on How Google Fuels Its Idea Factory. Here are five things “Google culture” sets as standards that coaches and VAs would benefit from imitating if they want a steady stream of innovations as well.

(1) Keep doing what you do best, no matter what the economy.

(2) Spend at least 20% of your time outside your main task. Don’t give this up even in a time crunch.

(3) Track everything! Know what is working and what isn’t and what contributed to what. (This is an area coaches may need help with. There are many tools available, but the most important thing is the commitment to keep records.)

(4) Always keep the end user in mind. Don’t try to make yourself or other coaches happy. Try to make your clients happy. (In Google’s case, that’s advertisers. They’re very clear about where their money comes from.)

(5) Keep connected to your team.

Why do these simple principles work? Do coaches even need to innovate?
