NCC Skill Building Call with Marion Franklin Conducted on February 2, 2006
Coaching Skill Practiced on This Call: REFLECTING
Reflecting what a client says is one of the best ways to make sure the client feels truly heard. Participants on this call learned several methods of reflecting, including how to create metaphors, how to reflect content, and how to reflect the feelings expressed or hinted at by the client. There was also a moment of two-stepping - taking the client for a little dance around denial. Along the way Marion deftly wove in keen insights about various coaching principles that were demonstrated in the call.
All this was accomplished with the client, one of the participants who volunteered to share a situation she was facing, merely sharing a two-sentence scenario. The rest of the call was spent allowing other participants to practice reflecting. There was no space for suggestions, any attempts to fix the situation, and no anticipation of a solution.
If you'd like to learn more about powerful reflection and getting to the source of the problem, use this convenient audio player to listen to this great coaching call. (It lasts approximately an hour.)
NOTE: All participants gave permission for this recording to be shared with you.
