NCC Coaching Trends 2009 Interview No. 5: Natalie Tucker Miller

Natalie Tucker Miller

I was delighted to interview Natalie Tucker Miller of Ageless-Sages.com for this series. Natalie and I were buddy coaches and part of a coaching study group several years. Natalie went on to become the president of the International Association of Coaching (IAC), a leading organization promoting excellence in coaching standards.

The difference between masterful coaching and “tips and advice” coaching, in Natalie’s words, is that a masterful coach knows how to create sustainable transformation for clients. There is a place for tips and advice in coaching, but masterful coaches go far beyond this initial stage. We talked about how buddy coaching, triads, and study groups, where a coach in training can practice their craft and receive structured feedback, can benefit coaches.

Natalie surprised me by saying that she does not believe certification is necessary for all coaches, despite serving for several years on the IAC tocreatea credential for coaches. Coaching is a self-regulated industry, so there are no legal requirements for certification. For Natalie coach certification is a personal quest to master the best coaching skills.

I enjoyed this interview very much. Natalie’s wisdom and positive spirit shone through. Hope you do, too!
